THE BIRCHBOX EXPERIENCE

THE BIRCHBOX EXPERIENCE

Not gonna lie, one of my favorite Christmas gifts this past year was Birchbox’s Women’s Monthly Beauty Box Subscription because let’s be honest, it’s like getting a gift every month! I’m a big fan of subscription boxes when it comes to beauty products because it helps me find what products I love without having to spend the big $$$ on the full size version just to test it out. I wanted to share with you all my experience on my very first curated box and give you a peak into my very own Birchbox experience.

THE PROS:

  • Only $10 a month for 5 beauty samples – you can even choose one of the 5 samples each month!
  • Each box is customized to YOU based on YOUR preferences! Pretty cool right? I’ve found some of my current favorite products through these samples and I love it!
  • You can purchase full size versions of your samples for free shipping + you get loyalty points that = more money to spend on what you love! $10 spent = $1 in points on the Birchbox site!

THE CONS:

  • No cons yet but i’ll be sure to report back 😉

SO, WHAT’S IN THE BOX?

While the sample selection changes on a monthly basis (which is pretty awesome), below are the great products I received in my January box!

  1. Eyeko Skinny Duo ($36) I don’t use eyeliner often and i’ll be honest, I’m not great at it. I gave this bad boy a try and absolutely loved it! So easy to create a fun cate-eye look or in my case, just a straight line, with the pen-style applicator!
  2. Air Repair Complexion Boosting Moisturizer ($23): I’m ALWAYS on the hunt for a good moisturizer. I took the sample size with me on my trip to NYC and it did wonders after subjecting my skin to dry airplane air! 10/10 will purchase.
  3. Real Chemistry Luminous 3-Minute Peel ($48): I’m always skeptic of peels due to having sensitive skin, but this particular one is targeted towards just that and get’s the job done without leaving my skin aggravated. Legit feel like i’m glowing immediately after using.
  4. Oribe Gold Lust Dry Shampoo ($44): OK Ya’ll know i’m a huge Oribe fan and this product is no different. It smells good unlike most dry shampoos I’ve tried and is seriously the most effective one I’ve tried as well. 11/10 because I can.
  5. VERB Hydrating Mask ($16): I put my hair through a lot (aka bleach, curling iron, straightening iron, blow dryer, etc.) and let’s be real it probably shows. This mask does some serious magic on my dry hair leaving it shiny and taming that frizz! Also only $16? Yes please!

Overall I’m a huge fan and honestly plan on re-subscribing. I even got my SO a 1-year subscription to Birchbox’s Men’s Monthly Grooming Subscription Box for his recent birthday and he’s absolutely loving it! I seriously look forward to us both getting our boxes so we can go through them together and see what goodies what receive each month. Have you tried any subscription boxes? I would love to hear your experiences!

BLONDE HAIR DON’T CARE

BLONDE HAIR DON’T CARE

This one is for all you girls out there with color-treated blonde hair. Your hair takes a pretty serious beating through all the bleaching and upkeep, so it’s important to nourish those platinum locks. There are a few products in my arsenal which have been absolute SAVIORS to my newly blonde strands, and I want to share their greatness with you!

ORIBE BRIGHT BLONDE

All three of the below products are my absolute FAVORITES when it comes to keeping my hair the color I want (aka not yellow). The Shampoo, Conditioner, and Radiance & Repair Treatment work wonders when it comes to combating unwanted brassiness. Even better? The products are also dermatologist tested, provide UV protection, are cruelty and gluten free, and are totally vegan!

Oribe Bright Blonde Shampoo for Beautiful Color

  • Violate pigments help eliminate brassiness and yellow tones
  • Dermatologist tested
  • Self 2015 – Beauty Award: Brighten

Oribe Bright Blonde Conditioner for Beautiful Color

  • Moisturizes and restores
  • Helps combat brassiness
  • Reverses damage by sealing moisture
  • Protects against future damage
  • Helps reduce split ends
  • Conditions your scalp to promote healthy hair growth

Oribe Bright Blonde Radiance & Repair Treatment

  • Repairs and prevents damage, brittleness, and split ends
  • Repaires damaged, porous blonde hair
  • Brightens and tones brasiness
  • Increases elasticity and softens dry and brittle strands

I’ve tried my share of purple shampoos that are supposed to help keep the yellow at bay, but this one really takes the cake in getting the job done! Also, the aesthetic right?! I’ll let you in on a little secret – TJMaxx occasionally carries it online at a great deal!!!

R+CO

R+CO High Dive Moisture + Shine Cream was suggested to me by my stylist as a great way  to keep my hair healthy and hydrated – man was she right!!! My hair is SO prone to dryness but I use this religiously after every shower and let me tell you, this stuff works wonders. Also vegan and cruelty free for the win!

R+CO High Dive Moisture + Shine Cream

  • Smooths and seals hair
  • Moisturizes and softens
  • Reduces frizz
  • Doubles as a leave in conditioner

I’m a skeptic when it comes to whether or not products actually work, but I could instantly tell after one use that my hair was more hydrated (which is key with intensely color treated hair). Moral of the story? I highly recommend!

Total transparency guys, this is not an ad, i’m just a huge fan of good products and healthy hair :). Interested in more posts with my fave products? Let me know!

Real Talk: Going Blonde

Real Talk: Going Blonde

Friends! Let’s talk about going blonde. I’m a natural Burnette – like dark brown hair. I had an epiphany earlier this year that I wanted to go blonde (think platinum), easy enough right? Wrong. I think social media has created this sense of “going blonde is easy” when in reality it is quite difficult for us dark haired gals. I wanted to give a  little insight into my journey of going blonde for any of you who may be considering it. PSA: I’m not an expert, simply someone who has spent many an hour in the salon chair.

The Process:

Appointment #1: Color correction to even it all out and get to a more workable starting point

Appointment #2: Begin the process of going blonde + more color correction

Appointment #3: Spend 8 hours actually going blonde and getting out all that unwanted warmness

Bonus Appointment #4: Decide I want to chop my hair off and spend another 6 hours going blonder

Things I Learned:

  • It will likely take more than one appointment. I was already lighter than my natural color when I started the process and it took three, THREE, appointments to get my hair to the intended color. The third appointment took legit 8 hours.
  • If someone says they can take your dark brown hair to platinum in 1 day, don’t believe them. I promise you will end up with significantly less hair than you started with. Trust me when I say it’s worth the wait.
  • Purple shampoo will become your best friend. For all you girls out there with crazy warm undertones (me), purple shampoo is like the golden ticket to keeping your hair a nice cool blonde for a longer period of time between appointments. Shout out to Oribe’s bomb purple shampoo that saves my hair (more to come this week on  my fave products).
  •  MOISTURIZER: your hair is going to be uber dry and will need some serious moisturizing. I tend to alternate between Oribe purple shampoo and a moisturizing shampoo like Caviar in addition to using R+Co High Dive after every shower (again, more to come on that later). Also never forget heat protection on your color treated hair, you’ll thank me later!
  • Be prepared for more frequent salon visits. With blonde hair comes more upkeep. I personally went for a dark root look in order to slightly minimize the maintenance of being an unnatural blonde (but also because it’s fun and edgy). You may want to go in for a gloss/tone in between actual color appointments to keep it the cool blonde you’re going for.
  • Lastly, I HIGHLY suggest getting it done in a salon. home bleaching is another way to really damage your hair. Not worth the risk IMO.

Main takeaways? Going blonde is a LOT of work, a LOT of maintenance, and a LOT of $$$. But if you’re down for it, it’s SO WORTH IT. Pro tip #1: patience is key. Keep on the lookout for a post on my FAVORITE hair products coming at you this week!

Have you gone platinum blonde? If so, what was your experience? I’m always interested in some great hair tips!

P.s. here is my past few years of hair history just for kicks!
